Visual literacy — Project EUROPE CULTURE

Visual literacy is part of mass communication. There are two overlapping concepts, as well as two facts that can significantly influence the masses and their behaviour. In the current situation, social networks in particular influence the public opinion with their content. Politicians no longer have the power to make decisions, as video, pictures and text flows are very flexible and very difficult to regulate due to the speed of information transmission. The social networks on the Internet are irreplaceable as a medium in the current situation and have a high power in transmitting messages. This development is global and knows no boundaries. The multi-layered network connects individual professions which, by their internal identity, meaning and content, can often cause differences in their clarity according to the place and time of their communication. In 2014 I created a project called EUROPE CULTURE, a follow-up to the projects of the City of European Culture in some of the aspects. However, the theme of EUROPE CULTURE makes it a different project in its entirety. Primarily, it stands on European values and what the young generation perceives with the content of a range of related topics. Students from the Academy of Fine Arts in Bratislava in Slovakia, the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw in Poland, students of the Ladislav Sutnar Faculty of Design and Art in Pilsen, and the Faculty of Art and Design in Ústí nad Labem in the Czech Republic were invited. Their works were based on workshops and collective discussions. Several presentation-related issues were encountered during the project which I will bring out in my presentation. At the same time, the project serves as a perfect example of good practice of the development of Visual Literacy.
